The WPT Prague was held at the Corinthia Towers Hotel in the Czech Republic’s capital city, with 256 players showing up at the venue’s Main Event to create a prize pool worth €730,340 ($773,824). Six days later, and it would Spain’s Javier Gomez who would triumph over the field to collect the prestigious title, as well as the tournament’s top prize of €175,000 ($185,110).
According to the Hendon Mob, Javier Gomez has now cashed in just four events throughout his career, amassing $433,352 in winnings along the way. Despite being his first tournament title, however, the latest score is only his second highest to date, the biggest being a 5th place finish at the 2015 Malta Main Event for €205,300 ($222,080).
A number of notable pros took part in the €3,300 WPT Main Event, and amongst those finishing in one of the competition’s 27 money spots was Yann Dion in 15th (€10,300), Steve O’Dwyer in 14th (€10,300) and Igor Yaroshevskyy in 12th (€12,500).
After the final table of six had been set, Javier Gomez (K-Q) eliminated Henrik Hecklen (A-4) in 6th (€34,100), before being dealt 10-10 and doing likewise to Abdelkader Benhalima (6-6) in 5th for €43,000. Continuing his steamroll, Gomez (6-6) sent Pedro Marques (A-J) to the rail in 4th (€57,400), while Gomez’ A-9 was also good enough to see off Fahredin Mustafov (7-7) in 3rd for €77,500, thus ushering in the heads-up phase of the competition.
As the final battle got underway, Gomez held a roughly 4 to 1 chip lead over Russian player Pavel Plesuv, but the tournament would continue for another four-hours before the winning hand was played. After Plesuv moved all-in preflop holding Qd-10d, Gomez made the call with 6c-6s, and following a 5c-Kc-9c-4c-Jc board by the dealer Pavel Plesuv had to be satisfied with a runner-up finish worth €120,000, while Javier Gomez was crowned the 2015 WPT Prague champion.
